Heavy-duty means more than high load
A heavy-duty bearing may face shock, contamination, shaft deflection, low speed, high temperature or difficult lubrication in addition to high radial or axial force. Selection should therefore consider the entire environment. A bearing with adequate catalogue load capacity can still fail early when the housing, seals or lubricant are unsuitable.
Spherical roller bearings
Spherical roller bearings combine high radial capacity, moderate-to-high axial capacity and self-aligning ability. They are widely used in conveyors, crushers, screens, large fans and process machinery where housings or shafts may not remain perfectly aligned. Their load capacity makes correct mounting and lubrication especially important.
Tapered roller bearings
Tapered roller bearings are strong in combined radial and axial loading and can locate shafts precisely. Paired arrangements are common in gearboxes, heavy wheel hubs and industrial shafts. Proper setting or preload is important because excessive preload increases heat while excessive end play can reduce accuracy and life.
Cylindrical roller bearings
Cylindrical roller bearings offer high radial capacity and stiffness. Certain designs allow axial displacement, making them useful as non-locating bearings in machines where shafts expand with temperature. Other flange configurations can carry limited axial load.
Shock and dynamic load
Impact loading can exceed average calculated load by a large margin. Consider the actual machine cycle, startup events, product jams and structural vibration. Conservative service factors and robust cages may be justified in crushers, mills and similar equipment.
Seals and contamination control
Dust and water are major causes of premature bearing damage. Labyrinth seals, contact seals, purge grease and correct housing design can be more valuable than upgrading the bearing alone. Inspect seals during every shutdown and maintain clean lubrication practices.
Mounting and fit
Large bearings often require controlled heating, hydraulic mounting or adapter/withdrawal sleeves. Incorrect hammering or excessive force can damage raceways before the machine even starts. Shaft and housing tolerances should be verified and mounting procedures documented.
Condition monitoring
Heavy assets justify baseline vibration, temperature and lubricant condition monitoring. Trending can identify looseness, lubrication problems or developing bearing defects while the machine is still available for planned maintenance.
